Scenario analysis asks what could follow if stated conditions hold. Its value comes from exposing assumptions, mechanisms, implications, and reasons the scenario may no longer apply.
A scenario is conditional
A scenario is an organized “if, then” path. It does not promise that an event will happen. Instead, it makes a possible chain of effects available for inspection: if these conditions hold, these mechanisms could lead to these implications.
The anatomy of an inspectable scenario
- Starting conditions: the facts or stated observations the scenario begins with.
- Assumptions: the conditions treated as true for purposes of the exercise.
- Mechanism: the proposed connection between a starting condition and a possible effect.
- Implications: what may follow if the mechanism operates as described.
- Invalidation conditions: evidence or changes that would weaken or end the scenario.
Compare paths instead of choosing a guaranteed outcome
A stronger analysis can compare a base case with alternatives, identify which assumptions differ, and explain what evidence would help distinguish them. The goal is not false certainty; it is a clearer view of what would have to be true for each path to remain plausible.
